Outdoor Recreation for Children with Disabilities & Autism
In 1947, the Achievement Centers’ Camp Cheerful, located in Strongsville, Ohio, opened as Ohio’s first camp with recreation programs for children with disabilities. Today, more than 60 years later, children and adults with physical, developmental, medical and sensory disabilities continue to enjoy and benefit from typical camp activities in a barrier-free environment. At Camp Cheerful, children and adults with disabilities participate in a variety of recreational activities that encourage confidence and independence, and create opportunities for lifelong friendships while having fun and improving their quality of life.
Camp Cheerful Camp Programs & Services
At the Achievement Centers' Camp Cheerful, campers enjoy all the traditional camp activities including: hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, arts and crafts, nature study activities, games, campfire activities, music and sports. We maintain an effective 1:4 staff to camper ratio for all summer camp programs. We also offer year-round Therapeutic Horsemanship sessions and a new state-of-the-art, fully handicap-accessible High Ropes challenge course during camp sessions. Our camp programs include:
- Day Camps
- Overnight Camp
- Weekend Respite Camp
- Camp for Children with Autism (Sensational Day Program)
River Rock Adult Day Program
The Achievement Centers for Children receives contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations, and service organizations. These contributions subsidize the actual cost of providing camp, allowing us to reduce our weekly fee in an effort to keep camp accessible for our campers. We experienced a significant decrease in funding for our 2017 camp programs, and we will experience another decrease in 2018. As a result of the decreased funding, we had to increase our fees for the 2017 camp season. We recognize that many of our families experience significant financial demands to meet the needs of their loved one with a disability, and we made every effort to avoid a fee increase. We truly look forward to meeting new campers, and we hope to share the summer with many returning campers helping everyone develop friendships, build confidence, and have fun!
