What is the Intensive Therapy Clinic?
The Achievement Centers for Children’s Intensive Therapy Clinic is a concentrated therapy program that focuses on a well defined goal or goals with increased frequency and longer duration of therapy sessions. The sessions are provided over a short period of time (5 days per week/2-4 weeks) and longer (than typical) duration of treatment per daily session (usually 3 hours). This model of intervention is typically sought by clients that are interested in achieving gross motor functional mobility goals, so physical therapy is usually the lead therapy discipline involved, but sessions may also incorporate occupational therapy and/or speech therapy. At the Achievement Centers for Children, we have the expertise and flexibility to work with children with dual diagnoses such as a physical disability and autism.
Who can benefit from the Intensive Therapy Clinic?
Our experienced therapists work with clients aged 3 years and older, including adults, who are interested in an alternative to (or in conjunction with) traditional therapies associated with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay, head trauma, stroke, mitochondrial disorders and brachio-plexus injury. If you are looking for a therapy program that would allow your child to focus on a specific goal, they may be a candidate for the Intensive Therapy Clinic. We welcome inquiries on individual cases, and offer free assessment services by our experienced therapists.
Are the clinic sessions held individually or as a group?
Since the treatments are based on each individual’s specific goals, our program is very individualized. Therapists work one-on-one with clients, creating treatment plans and blending therapy methods specific to each person. Our therapists work individually with the client and family to establish a caring, trusting relationship, and to identify motivational goals and treatment programs to achieve optimum, sustainable outcomes.
Where is the Intensive Therapy Clinic located?
Two of the three Achievement Centers for Children locations provide this service.
East side of Cleveland, Ohio: 2922 Northfield Road, Highland Hills
West side of Cleveland, Ohio: 24211 Center Ridge Road, Westlake.
What are typical goals that may be achieved?
The ultimate goal of our Intensive Therapy Clinic is to assist the individual to improve existing functional skills or to facilitate the development of emerging functional skills. Individual therapy goals are determined through an assessment and consideration of the individual client’s and family’s desires for what they need and/or want to be able to accomplish. For one person, improving function might mean developing the ability to bring food to their mouth to feed themselves. For another individual, it might be developing the capability to transfer more independently from their wheelchair to another surface, to take steps, or walk independently. There are different types of treatment techniques, therapeutic activities and tools that our therapy professionals utilize that help maximize the benefits of therapy intervention in the Intensives Therapy Clinic.
What kinds of outcomes have been seen?
Outcomes of clients who have participated in Intensive Therapy Clinic sessions at the Achievement Centers for Children have ranged from developing the ability to sit independently, to being able to walk more independently and for longer distances. Most times, due to the nature of the duration and length of the sessions, clients acquire increased joint and muscle flexibility, and build strength and endurance, along with developing or refining a functional skill.
Outcomes have proven to be sustainable and clients generally go on to continue to build additional skills on the foundation that they have acquired. The best sustainability is achieved when families and clients participate fully, by practicing new skills as a part of their daily life routines. Home programs are developed that are easy to use and target key muscles to stretch, positions to encourage, and motor skills to practice.
What methods of therapy are used?
Achievement Centers for Children utilizes special state-of-the-art equipment and hands- on therapy approaches. For example, traditional range of motion techniques that work on flexibility and joint mobility are maximized by using a specialized soft tissue strategy called Myofascial Release. Unique equipment includes the Universal Exercise Gym, and Therasuit. Achievement Centers also offers programs, such as Adapted Aquatics and Therapeutic Horseback Riding, that can be used in conjunction with the intensive therapy sessions to augment results and continue progress toward goals.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
A signed doctor’s prescription is not required, but it is preferred.
The Intensive Therapy Clinic is a unique model of treatment that incorporates many hours of therapy in a short amount of time. Insurance visits are not used for this intervention, and therefore there is no billing that goes out to the insurance company. Many clients choose our program because traditional therapies were not able to provide the focused, concentrated approach needed to achieve specific goals. The cost of a session is related to the individualization of time and therapy personnel.
Generally, the cost is approximately $1,800.00 per week.
