Adapted Basketball

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

- John Wooden
Former UCLA Basketball Coach

History

Wheelchair basketball has evolved from its beginnings after World War II as part of the Paralyzed Veterans Association as a recreational outlet for paralyzed and amputee veterans to a highly competitive international sport. Today, the sport is governed by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). This association is comprised of over 200 wheelchair basketball teams within twenty-two conferences. Wheelchair basketball has been a part of the Paralympics since 1960.

Today

The Achievement Centers’ Wheelchair Cavaliers Basketball team, with generous support from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, became the first such team in the state of Ohio. The first team was formed in 2010, and offers the opportunity for players to compete in a conference made up of teams from Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Practices and games are scheduled primarily on weekends to avoid conflicts with school and other extracurricular activities. The Achievement Centers’ Manager of Sports Services, Mike Urban, has been successfully running the Junior Wheelchair program for the past 2 years.

Tomorrow

Our long term goal is to field at least one Junior Division team and add a Prep team that would provide a developmental program where children can continue to progress as they get older. This will give the players the opportunity to develop their skills to the fullest, possibly play at the collegiate level, and perhaps even apply for athletic scholarships to further their education.

Eligibility

The team consists of school aged boys and girls, ages 8-17, with a permanent lower extremity physical disability. Players must be enrolled in school (not graduated). For more information or to join the team, please contact Mike Urban, Manager of Sports Services, Achievement Centers for Children at (440) 238-6200 ext. 245 or email mike.urban @achievementctrs.org.
